Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the role of strategic readiness in crisis management in the major Palestinian universities of southern governorates. The researcher used the descriptive analytical method. The study population consisted of (560) male and female employees of supervisory positions (academics and administrators) in the universities under study. For the purposes of the study, a questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection. The questionnaire was distributed to (281) participants of the community that were selected using a stratified random sampling according to the university variable. The retrieved and valid questionnaires for statistical analysis amounted to (264) questionnaires with a percentage of (93.95%) of the questionnaires distributed. The study concluded a set of results, the most important of which are: There is a large agreement about strategic readiness in its four dimensions in Palestinian universities, with a relative weight of (79.04%). Crisis management also showed a large degree with a relative weight of (75.18%). The results showed a statistically significant relationship between strategic readiness with its four dimensions and crisis management, as well as a statistically significant impact of the strategic readiness dimensions (leadership, strategic alignment, and technological readiness) in crisis management with the exception of the dimension (organizational culture). The results also showed that there were no differences in terms of strategic readiness attributed to the variables (age group, years of service and type of job), while there were differences attributed to the variables (gender, educational qualification and place of work). Moreover, the results revealed that there were no differences regarding crisis management that were attributed to the variables (gender, age group, educational qualification, years of service, job type), while there were differences attributed to the workplace variable. The study concluded with several recommendations, most notably: Universities are required to keep up with the technological development in their different fields of work. Universities, in addition, have to maintain a work environment and an organizational culture that supports and encourages the practice of different manifestations of creativity and innovation at all levels. Furthermore, the need for the implementation of face-to-face and electronic training programs for workers to constantly develop their knowledge and skills to keep pace with all updates in work systems. Furthermore, universities should get employees to be involved in the process of decision-making at the different administration levels and to encourage creativity and innovation by relying on motivational systems for the initiation of new ideas. In addition, universities need to form professional administrative units with competencies, expertise and administrative skills for crisis management, and to review plans related to crisis management on a periodic and continuous basis, and reformulate them based on environmental developments. Another important need is benefiting from the experiences of successful local and international universities and their expertise in crisis management.
