Abstract

The aim of thisstudy is to compare the therapeutic role of sulfonylurea drug "glibenclamide" with the extract of Chrozophora tinctoria leaves in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Male Rattusnorvegicus albino ratsweighing between 80-90gm were intraperitoneal injectedby a single dose of 150 mg/kg body weight (b.wt.) alloxan. Diabetic animals exhibited hyperglycemia. There was significant decrease in body weight compared to control animals. Urea concentrations and uric acid were also elevated markedly compared to controls. In contrast, total protein and albumin concentrations showed significant decrease compared to controls. Treatment of alloxan-induced diabetic rats with glibenclamide or Chrozophora tinctoria extract ameliorates all of the previously mentioned parameters. However, glibenclamide therapy was more efficient.Theresults of the current study demonstrated the antidiabetic and hypoglycaemic effects of Chrozophoratinctoria extract and underscore its potentials in the management of diabetes mellitus.
