Abstract

This study aims at identifying the role of risk management process according to the international standard (ISO31000:2018) in making strategic directions by applying it to Palestinian insurance companies in the southern governorates. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the descriptive analytical method. The study population consisted of all employees with supervising and managerial positions. The researcher used the questionnaire as a main tool for data collection, which he distributed using the complete survey method. The recovered and valid questionnaires for statistical analysis amounted to (65) questionnaires with a percentage of (97.01%). The most important findings of the study: The study finds many results, the most important of which are: There was a large approval by the respondents about the risk management process in accordance with the international standard ISO31000:2018 along with its six elements with a relative weight of (81.11%). There was also a large agreement about the strategic directions, where it obtained a relative weight of (81.97%). The findings also showed that there is a positive, statistically significant relationship at the level of significance (α ≤ 0.05) between risk management process with its six elements combined and the strategic directions, as well as a positive statistically significant impact at the significance level (α ≤ 0.05) for all elements of the process except (domain and context, risk evaluation, monitor and revision) in building strategic directions. The study also showed that there were no statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α ≤ 0.05) for the mean scores of respondents about the study variables (risk management process, strategic directions) in Palestinian insurance companies in the southern governorates attributable to: (gender, age group, educational qualification, years of service, job title). The most important recommendations of the study: The study suggested a number of recommendations, the most important of which were: there is a need for insurance companies to develop a practical model that reflects the extent to which companies apply this standard and to be attached to its annual report. There is also a need for companies to build advanced databases to document the risks they were exposed to and how to deal with them as well as the ways to avoid these risks. Moreover, it is necessary for insurance companies to use the latest technologies in order to develop their new services. They should also study the environment surrounding them from all sides in different ways and means to determine the appropriate strategic option.
