Abstract

This study aims at investigating the problems and difficulties those BA students at private Jordanian universities encounter when translating lexical legal terms in order toknow who has the higher proficiency males or females and to provide the right strategies and techniques to avoid these difficulties. The sample of this study is 50 undergraduate students (16 males) and (34females) who are major in English and Translation. They were selected from three different private universities: (AL-Zaytoonah University), (Amman AL-AhlyiahUniversity) and (Middle East University). In order to achieve the goals of the study the researcher used two instruments:(a) translation test that includes 15 legal sentences, and (b) interviews with three experts in the field of teaching translation. The results of this study show that the students encounter a number of difficulties when translating lexical legal terms. These difficulties have to do with student’s lack of knowledge of legal vocabularies,lack of knowledge of using translation techniques and methods in a correct way and lack of competence in understanding the meaning. The study recommends that students learn the right techniques to translate legal texts. It also shows that they should familiarize themselves with legal terms and legal texts in order to achieve high quality translation.
