Abstract

It is widely acknowledged that health care providers are crucial components in healthcare system. In their roles, they are regularly confronted with a variety of physical, biological and ergonomic hazards during the course of performing their duties. The general objective of this study was to assess health and safety risks among health care providers working in Al Shifa Medical Complex. The study utilized analytical cross sectional design. The study population 230 participants a 195 of them participate in the study resulting in a 84.78% response rate. The study respondents consisted of 195 (120 nurses and 75 physicians) who are working in emergency department, Burn unit and intensive care unit. The researcher used a selfadministered questionnaire. In total, 195 respondents completed the questionnaire with a response rate of 90.69%. SPSS version 20 was used for data analysis. Face, content and criterion related validity were done. The results showed that the highest physical risk among physicians and nurses is Entrances, stairs, ramps Internal floors and exits are in a safe condition 46.3% which constitute a high risk. Among the biological risks, 71.4% of health care providers reported that t Sharp box is available in the workplace it constitutes an extreme level biological risk. Regarding ergonomic risks, about (22.3%) of health care providers reported that long standing during the work is a high ergonomic risk. The results of this study showed that there is no significant association between the risk of physical and biological risks and the (working site, gender, age group and qualification) at Al Shifa (p<0.05), while there is a significant association between physical risks and the experience of healthcare providers (p=0.05). There are no significant association biological risks and the (working site, gender, experience, age group and qualification at Al Shifa (p<0.05). Moreover, there is no significant association between the risk of ergonomic and the (working site, gender, experience and type of health care provider) while there is a significant association between ergonomics risks and the age group and qualification of health care provider of healthcare providers at Al Shifa Medical Complex (p=0.05). On the other hand, the results showed that the total mean percentage of the knowledge regarding health and safety during the work of health care providers is 57.5%. The results of this study concluded that there is a lack of formal on-the-job training for health care providers regarding health and safety risks recognition and avoidance strategies.
