Abstract
This study deals with the foreign policy of Turkey and Iran towards the Syrian popular revolt. The study consists of an introduction and six chapters followed by a summary, results, and recommendations. The significance of the study stems from its elucidation of one of the most significant revolts of the Arab Spring, the Syrian Uprising whose crucial importance stems from the geographical and geopolitical position of Syria. The study has sought to uncover the political motives of both Turkey and Iran towards Syria since the onset of the popular revolt in March 2011 until the end of 2014, comparing those two policies to determine their influence on the course of the Syrian revolt. This is in an attempt to build on this study to determine the prospects of the lingering Syrian popular revolt against Syrian regime. The study has employed an eclectic methodology, thus making use of a number of research methods such as those of the descriptive, analytical, comparative and that of decision-making. The study has concluded that the Syrian Uprising has begun as an internal Syrian issue, characterized by non-violence before starting to take on military forms, and regional and international dimensions, which has provoked highlighting the regional dimension – focus of this study – represented by the Turkish and Iranian position whose security and stability as regional powers are affected by the spillover of the Syrian morass. Unlike the Iranian position, the study has found that the Turkish position began by being restricted by internal issues related to the Kurdish problem, and Army attitude, and external issues related to Turkey's membership with the NATO and the Turkish relations with the USA. Those issues have posed an obstacle for Ankara regarding its exercise of a role that would fit with her position on the regional and international arena. As for the Iranian role, the study has found that Iran's unequivocal strong involvement, support and complicity with the Syrian regime have complicated the Syrian situation, turning it into a crisis on both the regional and international levels; thus plunging its in a fathomless abyss with no certainties whatsoever. What is certain, however, the study has concluded, about the crisis is Syria's regression in time many decades.
