Abstract

This work adresses water salinity as a problem affects eggplant (Solanum melongena) production in Gaza Strip. Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were choosen to deal with this problem, as a suggested, natural alternative over breeding trans-plants, that could be a proper policy in the future. The main objective of this work is to investigate the influence of an isolated local fungus “Glomus spp.” as vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza, in alleviating salt strees of eggplant. This fungus was isolated from lacal planted soil which is never treated with chemical fertilizers. The isolated Glomus spp. was cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) media to prepare fungal inoculum. From a local nursery, 80 seedlings of eggplant were divided into two groups, planted in mini greenhouse and treated as follows:  40 inoculated seedlings with Glomus spp., were irrigated with four salinity levels (0, 50, 150, and 250) mM NaCl, each treatment with ten replications.  40 non inoculated seedlings were irrigated with four salinity levels (0, 50, 150, and 250) mM NaCl, each treatment with ten replications. The evaluation of the effect of Glomus spp. on alleviating salt stress was assessed based on comparison in some growth parameters between inoculated plants and non inoculated plants at all salinity levels. Those parameters were, shoot length (SL), root length (RL), dry weight of shoot (DWS), dry weight of root (DWR), number of leaves (NL), number of branches (NB) and flowering. The differences in growth measurements between inoculated plants and non inoculated plants at all salinity levels SL, DWR and NB, positively indicate that Glomus spp. alleviates salt stress in eggplant. Wherease, those differences for RL, DWS and NL at some concentrations of NaCl, did not clearly indicate for that positive effect of Glomus spp. in alleviating salt stress in eggplant. At the end of the study, the most important conclusions are; Glomus spp. can be isolated from local soil and cultured on PDA medium, mycorrhization between Glomus spp. and solanum molengena has succeeded, Glomus spp. has a very positive effect in alleviating salt stress in solanum molengena according to growth parameters that have been measured, and tt is obtained that Glomus spp. gave a satisfied results at 150 mM NaCl.
