Abstract

In healthcare facilities, health care providers are exposed to various physical, biological, chemical, and ergonomic risks. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate health and safety risks facing health care providers in the operating rooms at governmental hospitals in Northern Gaza Governorate. Methods: The researcher used descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 140 health care providers working in the operating rooms, all of them were included in the study as a Census sample, and 126 participated in the study with response rate 90%. The researcher used self-administered questionnaire for data collection. The researcher conducted a pilot study on 30 participants to examine its reliability and Cronbache alpha was 0.86. Results: The results of the study showed that the mean age of study participants was 37.2 years, 43.6% were surgeons and 17.4% were nurses, 32.5% have 6 -10 years of experience, and 37.3% have bachelor degree. The results also indicated above moderate work conditions (70.38%), prevalence of work-related symptoms such as fatigue, back and joint pain, and headache was moderate (58.04%). Concerning risk level in operating room, 54% of participants reported low physical risk, 41.3% reported low biological risk, 50.8% reported low chemical risk, 40.5% reported low ergonomic risk, while 4.8% reported high physical risk and 3.2% reported high ergonomic risk. Significant higher risk reported by anesthetists and participants who are married. Participants expressed moderate level of knowledge (58.46%) about occupational health and safety risks. The most common challenges to occupational health and safety risk included work pressure, followed by inadequate staff, poor medical devices, and long working hours. Conclusion: The study concluded that there is inadequate training for health care providers about occupational health and safety risk in operating rooms at governmental hospitals in the Northern Gaza Governorate
