Abstract

Standard precautions are a group of precautions prepared to minimize the transfer of microbes through blood or body fluids. They are practiced by all health providers to all patients throughout their stay in the hospital. And applied to all fluids of the body, irrespective of if they included blood or not. Also; applied to improper skin and mucous membranes. Aims: To identify neonatal nurse's knowledge and practice concerning standard precaution and those regard to sharp injuries in the government hospitals of Gaza Strip. Methods: The researcher utilized the analytical descriptive approach to reach the results through a modified research questionnaire utilized in one previous study. The study population involve of 164 participants the questionnaire was dispersed to them, while 155 questionnaires were regained from six major governmental hospitals in Gaza strip which were Al-Helal Emeriti Hospital, European Gaza Hospital, Al-Tahreer Hospital, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, Al-Shifa Medical Complex, and Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital. Results: The results exposed that there were no statistically significant differences in knowledge and practice concerning standard precautions and those regard to sharp injuries among neonatal nurses related to gender, age, qualification, hospitals and job description regarding respondents' views. On the other hand, there were statistically significant differences (P-value = 0.000) between knowledge of standard precautions measures and participants who took the training of standard precautions and place of received training on standard precautions. Also; there were statistically significant differences (P-value = 0.048) between the practice of standard precautions and experience years. The percentage of knowledge about standard precautions and those related to sharp injury were 86.2% and 88.5%, respectively; and the percentage of the practice of standard precautions and those related to sharp injury were 71.1% and 74.9%, respectively. The prevalence of sharp injury and needle stick injury in the previous year before conducting a study were 58.7% and 41.3%, respectively. Recommendation: More training courses on infection control and more focus on standard precautions through educational programs and regular lectures must be given to neonatal nurses in order to get better knowledge and practice of standard precautions.
