Abstract

This study has researched into the balance of International powers and the reflection and influence of this balance on the Syrian crisis. The study explores into the period extended from 26th February 2011, the date the crisis broke out, up to the end of April 2014, the date the study ended. The problem was identified in the main questions of what internal, regional and international variables are there, and how have those influenced both the regional and international balances. A number of questions were derived in an attempt to analyse the relationship between the International power balances and the Syrian crisis through an analytical study of the events. The aim of the study is to identify the notion and the dimensions of the International power balances and to examine the circumstances and the reasons that sparked the crisis. The study also aims to analyse the roles played by the powers involved in the crisis and to demonstrate the dimensions and the consequences of such balances on the Syrian crisis. It also aims to outlook the future of such balances considering the updates in the Syrian scene. The Study is based on a number of research methods and approaches. First is the Decision-Making approach analysing all the factors surrounding decision-makers in terms of foreign policies. Second approach used is Organizational Analysis which involves the analysis of a number of segments and departments working together in compatibility and coherence. The third approach, the study used, is the Game Theory which holds that the Syrian crisis as an international game played by some dynamic parts with the purpose of achieving their own interests. The fourth approach is Crisis Analysis approach employed to analyze both internal and external environments and the behavior of the dynamic powers in the crisis. Finally, the Out-looking approach is employed in order to outline possible scenarios of how the Syrian crisis would be brought to an end. The most important conclusions drawn from the study include that International power balances have a huge impact on the crisis manifested in how its lifespan was extended. In addition, the world is witnessing a proxy conflict in Syria and a transformation in the world unipolar system towards a new multipolar one, although the U.S.A. exerts efforts in order to maintain its unipolar domination on the world trying to prevent any other rising power to share its roles. This research has come out with several recommendations, one of the main recommendations was research in the international regional approach towards the settlement of the Syrian crisis gaining the agreement of all the involved parts and thus could lead to a real and radical solution that would guarantee the security and unity of the Syrian territories.
