Abstract
Personality is one of the most essential factors that have an impact on foreign language learning. Extroversion / introversion is one out of four pairs of personality types which are reported to have a prior significance in language learning studies. Different personality types can be observed in students' developing different learning styles for themselves, which denotes the fact that there is a close connection between students' personality, and the style and the strategy that they develop to learn and succeed on the other. Accordingly, foreign language teachers should know more about the students and increase their awareness of their students' personal differences in language classrooms. This will help them understand and appreciate the fact that no personality type is more beneficial than the other and that providing a successful instruction is only possible through teachers' identifying and understanding of their students’ individual differences. The current study aims at finding out: 1. The dominance of extroversion/introversion personality trait in Iraqi EFL university students . 2. Language proficiency of Iraqi EFL university students according to their extroversion/introversion personality trait. 3. The correlation between extroversion \ introversion personality trait and language proficiency of Iraqi EFL university students. 4. The significance of the differences in the relation between extroversion/introversion personality trait and language proficiency. The sample of the present study consists of 247 students from the third stage at the Departments of English language / College of Education for Women, and College of Education \Ibn Rushd for Human Sciences, University of Baghdad. To achieve the aims of the present study, two instruments have been used, namely; Myers-Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI) questionnaire which is adopted to find out students' personality type, and a constructed proficiency test to measure students' ability to use the four skills of the language. After ensuring the validity and reliability of the instruments, the two instruments are applied to the sample of the study. IX The statistical manipulation of the results achieved revealed the following: 1. The percentage of extrovert students is 33% of the total number while the introverts represent a proportion (15%). There are statistically significant differences between the two groups and in favor of the extrovert students. 2. The extrovert university students have an accepted level in language proficiency. 3. The introvert university students have a low level in language proficiency. 4. The results of the current study prove that there is a real correlation between the extrovert attribute and the test of language proficiency in general. 5. According to the results of the present study, there is no real correlation between the introversion characteristic and language proficiency. 6. There is a correlational relationship between personality type and language proficiency.
