Abstract

The current study, entitled "Ideational and Educational Readings of Taha Hussein and John Dewy" involves an ideational and educational study of the thinker and novelist Taha Hussein and the American philosopher John Dewey, by means of focusing on the most prominent ideational, philosophical and educational opinions and intellectual guidelines disregarding, partially, the philosophical and literary aspects. This research rested on the implications these two scholars attempted to embed and establish in the minds of the readers through their books and thoughts and also endeavoring to liberate the minds of their societies and establishing educated generation and society that bear responsibility in terms of managing the teaching and educational process. This thesis consists of an introduction, four chapters, a conclusion and findings. Chapter one involved two sections; the first tackled the importance of the research and the need to it and the researcher presented the though in general and the educational though in particular and its importance to the human. He also tackled the education and philosophy and their importance for the individual and society and also the influence of Taha Hussein and John Dewey's thoughts on their societies, but section two dealt with the previous studies that are relevant to the subject. From the other hand, chapter two involved four sections. Section one involved the scientific life of Taha Hussein and the challenges he encountered in his childhood. Section two dealt with the educational life and biography of John Dewey, but section three tackled the most important factors and forces that affected the thought and chracter of Taha Hussein, which had a great impact on smoothing his thought, personality and the effect of the powers that impacted his thoughts and character and the influence of the western culture and orientalists. Section four tackled the factors, represented by the philosophical and educational schools, that affected the thought and character of John Dewey. Moreover, chapter three included two sections; the first discussed the opinions and intellectual, educational and philosophical attitudes of Taha Hussein, through which he aimed at reforming the teaching process in Egypt and also reforming the society. Section two dealt with the opinions and intellectual, educational and philosophical attitudes of the American philosopher Dewey, which had a great impact on the American society in particular and on the world in general. From the other hand, chapter four consisted of two sections; the first studied the similarities and the convergence of the opinions about the intellectual B Abstract attitudes of the thinkers, while the second tackled the differences between them. Finally, the researcher ended the research with a conclusion that involved the most important findings and results of the study. In the end I would like to extend my great thanks to Almighty Allah for all the blessing and grace bestow on me and for the guidance in my humble work represented by this thesis and in my scientific and practical life, so all the praise and thanks to the Lord of the lords.
